Eights – wisdom teeth is a work from the Tablecloths series. In its centre is the letter X, which found its way into the Polish language after 1989. To me, it is associated with the Pewex department store, where my sister and I used to look at widely unavailable toys and sweets.
In 1992, my parents opened a Dentex dental practice, and in 2004 they emigrated from Poland to the UK. In 1995, I saw the following commercial on TV: “My name is X. I know what I want. When I’m thirsty, I drink Sprite.”
On the fabric, I also embroidered the letter Aleph, which is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and stands for the infinite aspect of divinity. In this particular work, it symbolizes a new beginning.
