American dream is dream
Hand embroidery on cotton fabric
2022
71 x 56 cm. Animation by Jan Moszumanski.
American dream is dream is a poem about dreaming. The embroidery paraphrases passages from feminist and psychoanalytic theory, pop culture, and politics. Drożyńska quotes Hélène Cixous, Martin Luther King, Sigmund Freud, Annie Lennox, Irving Berlin, and Occupy Wall Street. She formulates a unique language written in embroidery complete with crossed out passages, with which she captures a feeling of frustration, and state in between – agreement, and simultaneous disagreement. She uses errors to introduce Freudian slips into written language, and weaves together the fantasy of American culture with the realities of life in Poland and Eastern Europe.
