Hand embroidery on cotton fabric
2007-2014
Various dimensions
I never saw my mother or my grandmother embroider. I started embroidering in 2008, during Uszyj dom kultury/Sew yourself a community centre, when I spent my days sewing and smoking cigarettes. In moments of idleness, I read the graffiti covering the side wall of the neighbouring block of flats. As I sewed, smoked, and read, I wondered how to transcribe these words written on the walls. Maybe that’s why I chose to use needle and thread. Since then, I have treated embroidery as a writing technique. I examine how words can function in different spaces, and what kind of relationship is forged between content and form. My collection of embroidered works now includes dozens of pieces.
Selected works from this series were used in the Haft Miejski/Urban Embroidery project.
