In 1987, in reference to the Berlin Wall, Ronald Reagan said to Gorbachev: “Tear down the wall!”
“Build the wall,” chanted Donald Trump supporters in 2016.
The Great Wall of China wins the race for the wall, because China becomes the world’s first economy.
The language of economics used on Wall Street is hermetic and incomprehensible, inaccessible to the common man, much like medieval Latin, which was the language of the monarchy.
In 1978, Jacek Kaczmarski sang the song Mury/Walls:
“Pull the teeth of the bars from the walls!
Tear off the shackles, break the whip!
And the walls shall fall down, fall down, fall down
And they will bury the old world!”
Until 1971, the US dollar was “good as gold” because it could be exchanged for gold. The so-called gold parity ended was brought to an end by Richard Nixon. This meant that central banks were freed of all restrictions on the production and printing of money.
