Tower Block
Project in urban space
2002-2004
When I graduated from university in 2002, I decided to tackle a subject that had fascinated me since childhood. I have always been intrigued by blocks of flats and housing estates. I decided to gain access to a block of flats and take pictures of all its residents. At the beginning I had great difficulty getting in. It was hard to explain, over the intercom, what I wanted. Nobody would let me in, not even onto the landing. I then made posters describing who I was and what I wanted to do. This really helped me get into the building and talk to the residents. I wandered around the block for many months. Over time, I became just another tenant who could often be seen in the staircase, waiting for one of the residents. Some people offered me lunch, others tea. Someone asked me to go for a walk, but I only met with residents in the building. I managed to photograph 34 families living in the block.
