Silver and Gold Thoughts
Hand embroidery on cotton fabric
2015 -
Various dimensions
The series includes more than 150 embroidered fabrics, which document graffiti, protest banners, fragments of conversations overheard on public transport, statements from politicians, and advertising slogans,
The expressions were written using hand embroidery techniques on pastel cotton. The dimensions of the works vary from 18×30 cm to 30×48 cm.
The works from the Silver and Gold Thoughts series will appear in urban spaces as the Urban Embroidery 2 project, i.e., as reproductions of embroideries on billboards, city lights, and stickers.
If you find a sticker in the city, you can peel it off and take it home with you.
Arkadiusz Półtorak described this series as follows:
“It is worth noting, however, that the artist consistently deconstructs the vernacular-feminist view of embroidery, and she does so even when it comes to formal choices. When embroidering the notes from her ongoing series, Silver and Gold Thoughts, which have already been reproduced a number of times in calendars, on stickers, and even billboards, Drożyńska uses traditional techniques, known from making, for example, traditional bed linens or tablecloths. The fact that she embroiders vulgarisms and urban slang in this way, however, introduces a clear tension between the form and content of the works in question. Embroidered fabrics have always been regarded as festive, and sometimes even as proof of certain social status. In Silver and Gold Thoughts, they become a medium for the language of the street.”
