Power–lessness
Performance in urban space
2013
The quoted passage comes from Zuzanna Sokołowska's text ‘Radość głośniejsza, niż uliczny ruch’, published in the catalogue ‘Drobnostki’ published by BWA Katowice.
“Her latest works also touch upon the urban fabric. This time, Drożyńska goes against the grain, attempting to address the process of the increasing number of actions in public space, which frequently assume impacting real change, which does not necessarily, according to the artist, happen. As she points out, she is often asked to conduct social intervention in urban spaces. This makes her feel like a cultural production machine, which often reminds her of a soap bubble. In her latest project, presented as part of Drobnostki “Small Things,” she attempts to ironize “cultural productions” that focus on quantity rather than quality. She creates a beautiful, ephemeral image by releasing soap bubbles in the city to make it momentarily feel like a fairy tale. This seemingly cheerful action, raises fundamental questions about the meaning of art in public space.
The artist, returning to the notion of a children’s game, attempts to say that any such cultural event can be compared to backyard games, which are as ephemeral as a skipping game drawn on the pavement with chalk, permanently washed away by rain. Drożyńska thus gives an individual answer to the doubts that have been bothering her, defining the dubious significance of this kind of art to any change in thinking. Thus, she treats the artists’ actions, as well as her own, as a frivolous game that is meant to temporarily improve the visual structure of the city, helping residents get used to the side effects of living in a large agglomeration. Can we really talk about real change if the topics raised only encourage discussion and promises, rather than real, concrete action? Under the guise of innocent fun, Drożyńska attempts to activate the audience’s consciousness.”
