In the middle of the fabric, I embroidered the symbol meaning a million in Cyrillic ( ҉). The two bullet-shaped characters are a mixture of the word “I” in Polish, English, and Ukrainian. The phrase written below in Yiddish means: “new language/tongue is about to come”. The fabric is framed with quotes from interviews with people from Strzelczysk, a Ukrainian village that is almost exclusively inhabited by Poles. The interviews were conducted as part of a sociolinguistic study carried out by Ewa Dzięgiel of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The research focused on the formation of bilingualism among people of Polish descent in Ukraine.
