Binoculars
Installation
2013
The project was carried out in a tenement house with a complex architecture and history. The building is made up of three buildings; this makes it difficult to find one’s way around after just a few minutes. A simple optical device has been installed in the doorway to help one find one’s way around the building. The binoculars significantly distort the image behind the door, thus offering a commentary on the complex history of the tenement house at 5 Grodzka Street in Lublin.
Binoculars are not really binoculars at all. They do not offer a closer look at what is far away. They only show a fragment of a distorted story. Any honest account of history is always fragmentary, subjective, and distorted, and, what is more, edited to suit particular circumstances. What we see is always an interpretation of some kind, and that is what Binoculars is about. The door with eyes balances its weight and become an observer of what is yet to happen here. TBC.
