ĄĘŻĆĘŻĄŁ
Hand embroidery on cotton fabric
2021
160 x 220 cm
In the centre of the fabric, I embroidered an eye with a wide-open mouth inscribed in it. Around the iris, there are Polish letters with diacritical marks: ĄŻĆĘŻĄŁ. At the edges of the fabric, there are ornaments composed of letters from the Ukrainian alphabet: ґ (ge) and я (ja).
I also embroidered interviews with people with experiences of migration, emigration, and exile. One person recounted her experience of speaking a foreign language and how it affects how she is perceived by those around her. Because her foreign accent betrays her identity, whenever she is among people she doesn’t know, she often prefers to keep quiet and just watch.
