Sew yourself a community centre
Socially engaged action
2008-2009
A political action that has gone down in history as a manifesto on urban politics. It revolved around one community centre whose future was under threat. There were various reasons for this: a construction boom, the expansion of a new housing development, and the sale of the land on which the community centre was situated. In its decision-making, the city had not included a plan B for the community centre, located in Kraków’s Wola Duchacka – a mostly residential district outside the city centre boasting, in addition to the Community Centre, four schools, and a shopping centre. Under these circumstances, we felt it was necessary to sew a new building. The sewing took six months, and was performed by people directly involved with the Community Centre: the managers, the Senior Citizens’ Club, a hip-hop group, and residents of the estate. The opening of the new, sewn community centre was covered by the media and the local newspaper. Among other things, this contributed to the fact that the space still exists today.
